Reality Sucks 3

September 28th to November 14th

Mathieu Cardin

In his first solo exhibition with TAP Art Space, Mathieu Cardin presents Reality Sucks 3. More than just a visual journey, the exhibition is a profound reflection on the aesthetics of presentation. It challenges viewers to question the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. As visitors navigate the gallery, they'll be met with glimpses of radiant red Coca-Cola bottle caps, prompting thoughts on the delicate interconnections that shape our ecosystem.

Cardin delves into the ordinary nature of our existence, drawing us away from societal artifices. Meticulously designed stations present scenes punctuated with cigarette butts, highlighting the striking contrasts between plastic, prefab, and nature. The exhibition's design suggests a world where everything holds deep significance, even if not immediately spectacular.

At its core, Reality Sucks 3 doesn't just present a collection of objects. Instead, it's a harmonious ensemble enriched with deep introspection on the aesthetic and symbolism of each chosen element. Through this, the exhibition hopes to awaken a genuine awareness of environmental conservation, challenging viewers to perceive and appreciate the captivating narratives that reside within the mundane. So, as you immerse yourself in this revealing artistic experience, feel free to light up a cigarette (but not really), and lose yourself in reflection.

About Mathieu

Born in 1983, Mathieu Cardin is originally from Outaouais. His practice, which mainly takes the form of sculptures and installations where accumulation and deconstruction combine, leaves the viewer to distinguish between what is fiction and reality. Cardin's work is often articulated around a narrative story where the audience, as an accomplice of the artist, plays a dual role of actor and spectator. His installations have been presented in Quebec, notably at the Parisian Laundry, Fondation Guido Molinari and Galerie B-312, as well as in France, Italy, and Mexico. Since 2008, Mathieu Cardin has been living and working in Montreal.
